Youth and media standard of young people media literacy in Slovakia

Abstract:


Drafting arguments for this research objective we came out of the fact that standard of media literacy is ability of access, analyse, evaluation and generation of information with specific acts of different characters. In this definition we distinguish 4 basic characteristics of medial literacy: the ability to get access to information from media, to analyse them, to expose them to evaluation and be able to form information independently. These components make up the basis of capacity that should be adopted by media literacy person.

Methodology of research and research sample:


We use quantitative empirical research methods in the project – combination of the questioner with the written tests and their content analyses and evaluation. Overall number of respondents was 674: 206 of them were university students, 188 secondary school students and 180 pupils of elementary schools (7th up to 9th grades).

Research results:


Nowadays problem is the capacity and interest in choice from media characters/formats that do not only have entertainment function but by their content and form they are also contribution to valuable personal living, interaction with their peers, participation on community life and so on. One of the most important sources of information but also a passive model of spending leisure time continues to be watching TV. The results of our research indicate that young people interests are shifting from TV broadcasting to interactive forms of internet content (chat, discussion forums, social nets etc). Relatively large number of young people uses these new media technologies exclusively for entertainment and informal conversation with their peers. A part of young people disposes of certain measure of resistance against manipulative trends in news services, entertaining and advertising media contents. It seems to be rather intuitive ability then well-knit and operational/functional system of life skills enables critical evaluation of media content. Moreover this intuitive ability to face persuasive tendency is in the majority of cases practicable in the frame of open and visible manipulation with audience.

Research recommendations:


It is needed to take advantage of the reality that young people in Slovakia are increasingly ”on line” generation and to decline maximum this finding at creation of informative materials, counselling and new forms of interactive communication assigned to this target group. Just thereby it can be even partially contributed to alignment of young people to worthy and safety contents not only in the sphere of internet but also in the other media. It is needed to take advantage of finding that young people like and are ready to discuss about media. Appropriate way of discussions should be disputable forums, round tables, informal trainings and others. To organise such events could be involved not only schools but self -government bodies – student school boards and youth parliaments. Important target group should become children and youth clubs, leisure time centres, pastoral and community centres etc. Big potential have got interactive solutions regarding to phenomenon Web 2.0 – sharing of video and audio files, photography etc. Spectrum of potential themes is really wide – from drug prevention through internet safety pending discussion about different media formats.
