Abstract:


Between September and October 2007 (873 respondents) there was done presentable research of secondary school students in Slovakia. The research confirmed that civic science and science about society took an important place among school subjects concerning the subject where the students are getting knowledge about parliamentary democracy, working of political system and so on.

After year 2003 students´ participation at school self-governments through student school committees becomes a new chance for learning about democracy by “learning by doing”.

Different levels determination of secondary school students´ participation on school self-government life confirmed, that there has already been creating a kind of participating pyramid – that shows logic of representative democracy: students know about the existence of Student School Committees (SSC)at school (70%), they vote its members (30%) or they stand as a candidates to SSC in their schools (11%). Students have one deputy in 45% of Secondary School Committees in Slovakia.

Important is the fact of better understanding by secondary schools student staff the “motives” for activities of voted members to SSC. The students admit them three motives as priorities – usefulness of their activity, meaningfulness of spending their time and strong will to enforce the change.

Students expectations from their school self-governments are: especially development of the services for students during their stay at school (refreshment, copying of documents) and condition improvement for after school activities.

Development of technical and scientific activities and to supply school by didactic technology has still got for students their persistence.

It was surprise for us that students expectation on solving their problems in terms of school schedule, school order or school teaching deceased a bit compared with year 2005. Students avoid the conflicts with their teachers or school headmasters.

Research recommendations:


SSCs become a serious partners for school directorate only in case of more essential questions that result for SSC from the law. When the students will have possibilities express themselves about school schedule, school order content of school teaching and when they will have possibility to merit-rate their teachers. It all will also relate to the routine and comfort of teachers on teaching or stereotypes in ruling school by its directorate. Trainings of new SSC members will be devoted to these enquiries in future years.
